May Day is also known as International Workers’ Day or also called as Labour Day which is a celebration of workers and the laborers that is being promoted by the international Labor movement, several anarchists, socialists, and communists and it is celebrated on May 1st every year. In Chicago on 4 May 1886, this date was chosen for International Workers’ Day by the the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair.

It is being a traditional European spring celebration, May Day is a public national holiday in all most all the countries, but in only some of those countries it is celebrated specifically as “Labour Day” or “International Workers’ Day”. In Some countries it is being celebrate on some other days significant to them, such as the United States which celebrates this Labor Day on the every first Monday of September.

In India, The first May Day celebration was organised at Chennai (then Madras) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on 1 May 1923. This was the first time where the red flag was used in India. The party leader Singaravelu Chettiar made all the arrangements to celebrate May Day in 1923. One meeting was held at the beach opposite to the Madras High Court and the other meeting was held at the Triplicate beach being held at two places.

The Labour Kisan party had introduced May Day celebrations in Madras. A resolution was passed stating that the government should declare May Day as a holiday. The president of the party has given the non-violent principles of the party. The financial aid was requested.

May Day is a National holiday in the country and is also known as “Kamgar Din” in Hindi, “Kamgar Divas” in Marathi and “Uzhaipalar Dinam” in Tamil. In North India, Labour Day is mostly not given importance as a holiday now.

The 1st May is also celebrated as “Maharashtra Day” and “Gujarat Day” to mark the date in 1960, when the two western states attained statehood after the former Bombay State was divided on linguistic lines. Maharashtra Day was held at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai. Schools and offices in Maharashtra remain closed on the May 1st.

1. Dancing around a Maypole.
2. Decorating a tall pole with garlands of flowers and ribbons.
3. Making a group of friends each having a ribbon and dancing around the pole, interweaving the ribbons with a braided affect. The braid is undone by retracing the previous steps.
4. Organising a picnic outdoors in the sunshine.
5. Attending a May Day Festival.
6. Visiting a local fresh air market.
